Introduction

From semester to semester, you'll often find as a faculty member that you've already put in the work in a previous Canvas course and that putting all that work into a new course shell from scratch is inefficient. You can copy Canvas course materials from previous Canvas courses to make things a lot easier. This article will show you how to copy your materials from a previous Canvas course to a current Canvas course shell.

Procedure

To copy Canvas course materials from a previous Canvas course...

To Copy All Materials from Another Canvas Course

  1. Log in to Canvas.
  2. Open the course you wish to copy materials into.
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. On the right, click on Import Course Content.
  5. Pick Copy a Canvas Course as the Content Type.
  6. Here’s the tricky bit. For Search for a course, you can either…
    1. Click on the Select a course dropdown and pick a course to copy from (among the list of courses you’re set as Teacher within the Canvas system), or you can…
    2. Use the Course name search box to find your course if you have a large list of courses. The search box is pretty literal with its search terms, so the best way to search is to type the subject code and course number together with no spaces. For example, type MG301 or MK690. This will bring up a list of courses that match the search. Click on the appropriate course to select it for copying.
  7. Choose All content to copy everything.
  8. Click the Import button.
  9. Next, you’ll see Current Jobs appear at the bottom. Look for the Current Jobs’ most recently listed job (the one you made by clicking Import, usually at the top of the list) to say Complete. It may take a minute or two after before the job is complete. After that, just look through the course to see your materials and start adjusting dates; you’re all done!
