CITS is responsible for providing access to software applications necessary for the University to carry out its mission. For the purposes of this document, access refers to acquiring, installing and supporting applications deemed mission critical by the TAC and, to varying degrees, applications requested by Schools and Departments.

In this Article:

Introduction

Alcorn State University is committed to respect copyrights and intellectual property laws and, therefore, any software installed on University inventoried computers must be properly licensed. Any student, faculty or staff that uses University technology resources to receive or obtain or installs or allows to be installed on a University own computer improperly licensed (pirated) software shall be in violation of this policy and subject to disciplinary actions as prescribed by the Acceptable Use Policy and/or official actions deemed necessary by the University administration. Said user may also be referred to by CITS staff to law enforcement personnel.

The lists of Supported Software will be revised quarterly and as needed by The Office of the CIO or the TAC.

Officially Supported Software

Applications acquired and installed by CITS for campus wide distribution. The CITS Help Desk will provide configuration and usability guidance for and conduct troubleshooting of these applications. The Office of the CIO is exclusively responsible to maintain current licensing agreements and, as appropriate, vendor/developer maintenance contracts in support of these titles. In order to ensure compliance with software metering policies, this software must be installed through the Alcorn.edu domain. This software will be updated and patched by CITS when available. Unless otherwise noted, CITS will support the latest two (2) versions of Officially Supported Software.

Partially Supported Software

Specialized applications installed by CITS for limited distribution. These applications are designated “Partially Supported” due to their dedicated nature. Depending on the level of adoption of these applications, CITS may acquire the license for these titles or suggest the requesting departments budgets provide for them. CITS Help Desk support is limited to the trouble free installation and proper function of the application itself – not usably issues. Specifically, CITS will ensure that the application “Opens, Saves, and Prints”. Additional support maybe available if there are CITS personnel familiar with the application. This additional support is supplied on a “best effort” basis as time permits. CITS will provide or contract training when resources permit, but users are encouraged to educate themselves on the usage of these titles.

Not Supported Software

Software not recommended –but not prohibited – under this software policy. Software that is not supported by CITS Help desk is listed here because this software generally does not prevent a user from performing mission critical tasks as deemed by the TAC but neither represents the accepted “best practice” approach. The not supported software group is permitted only as a measure of flexibility toward acceptable “personal preference” options in campus computing. The Office of the CIO, unless otherwise noted, will not fund the purchase of any not supported software. Schools and departments are encouraged, however, to consult with the Office of the CIO prior to purchasing or electing to use any software listed under this category. Support maybe available if there are CITS personnel familiar with the application. Support is supplied on a “best effort” basis as time permits. This list is not limited to the software below. If departments require central ITS support of unsupported products, please contact the Office of the CIO to schedule a consultation. Options may include service-level agreement with CITS to explore funding options for the increased support demands

  • Mac OS and any supporting software
  • Any *nix platform
  • Web browsers other than IE7 (Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.)
  • Email Clients other than Outlook (Netscape, Thunderbird, Outlook Express, etc.)
  • Corel Work Perfect
  • VMware Server

Unauthorized Software

Applications that serve no justifiable business need at the University and/or those that negatively impact the performance, efficiency or security of the employee, computer or data network. CITS will make no effort to support or otherwise authorize resources to enable usage of University technology assets for activities not directly aligned with its mission, goals or initiatives. This includes access to websites or plug-ins needed to these access websites. To that end, the following applications serve no need in this environment and therefore are prohibited from installation on any inventoried University property. CITS technicians and users with installation privileges found in violation of this section will immediately have installation privileges revoked and the unauthorized software removed. Users are encouraged to consult the CITS help desk before installing or accessing questionable software applications or websites.

  • Any improperly licensed software (If your department didn’t buy it, don’t install it)
  • P2P file sharing applications (Ares, Morpheus, Limewire, etc.)
  • Instant Messaging (IM) applications
  • Unlisted Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware Applications
  • RealPlayer
  • Weather Bug, IE toolbars or any other free web tools
